A timeline of Copyright law in the US.
Did you know that each time the copyright of Mickey Mouse has come up for expiration, Disney has successfully lobbied for an extension of copyright law? It's now up to 75 years after the death of the author (for works-for-hire, like Disney shit, it's 95 years after the first publishing, or 120 years after date of creation, whichever comes first). The Founding Fathers, in the Copyright Act of 1790, had fourteen in mind.
