Grinning like an idiot. Ritz Camera is selling the first disposable digital camera, interestingly branded the "Dakota Digital Single-Use Camera". It sounded interesting to me, so I picked one up for $11. It's a 1.3 megapixel camera (the photo to the left is a cropped example image of me grinning like an idiot) that runs on two AA batteries and can store up to 25 images. It even allows you to erase the last picture taken, and take it again if you wish, and has a 10-second self-timer. Once you have your 25 shots, you take it in for processing and you get your shots on a CD. I'm not sure how much this service costs, though.
If you remove the little sticker warning you not to do so, you have access to the I/O pins for the camera's internal memory. With the use of a USB cable cut from a dead mouse, some software for the camera's chipset, and a little bit of engineering, I was able to get the photos off it and onto Suw. With some proper persuasion, it can also be used as a web cam. Not a bad investment of ten bucks.
