I learned something very important today: Regardless of how smart I think I am, or how smart I think I need other people to think I am, I don't have to prove anything.
I tried to install a programmable thermostat in our apartment, and I've failed to make it work properly. This doesn't mean I'm not smart, it just means I don't have any HVAC training. I'm not expected to know how to install a heat pump thermostat any more than someone else is expected to know how to install a video card. Neither is a particularly difficult task as long as everything goes well, but both can be very frustrating to an amateur if everything doesn't.
I've decided to stop before I break it, and consult the advice of someone who knows--the exact advice I give to people who try (and fail) to properly install their own video cards. In the wise words of Stuart Smalley: "...and that's okay."
