First and Last...
First bike: A really old blue one. With training wheels.

First self-purchased album: I bought Ace of Base's The Sign from a friend

First piercing/tattoo: None.
First independent home: 370 Johnson Hall. Stayed there for three weeks before moving to 402 Thompson Hall, where I lived for three years.

Sometimes weird messages show up on my cell phone from people who mistake my SMS form for a search box. I'll get stuff like Dave Matthews mp3 Lillywhite and the like.
I have to say that "Disposing Bodies"+acid takes the cake, though.

Comments:
"Obviously with the "disposing bodies" comment they've never seen Forensic Files or The New Detectives. Pflt amateurs. :)"
     -bianca   [2003-06-28 11:09:12]
"Acid works though. Until your family accidentally lets slip that you put your missing brother in the acid-filled fridge out back. Then, of course, the game is up."
     -Melissa   [2003-06-29 23:14:06]
"Since they're asking my weblog about how to dispose of a person ([s]he doesn't specify whether or not the body is living, mind you), I think it is in fact safe to assume [s]he's an amateur."

With the RIAA's recent announcemet that they'll be suing users of P2P networks, I was interviewed by the Forum (your@mom.com, passwd: asdf) about copyright issues. Little did I know, this story would run today on the FRONT PAGE. With picture.
That's a picture of me in my office--notice the red stapler on my desk, and the Cheeky Girls poster in the background. =)

Furthermore, PHP and Zend's tools will have trouble penetrating small to medium-size businesses that do not have IT staffers who are capable in Web scripting, according to Meyer. "They need more robust tools to seamlessly build their applications," he said.
     - Yahoo!: How Far Can Zend Take PHP?
If they're not capable in scripting, why are they on your IT staff?
Seriously, if you're so inexperienced in any kind of scripting at all that you can't figure out PHP in an hour, what good are you on an IT staff? Your usefulness is pretty much limited to rebooting Windows servers, and you're probably being paid too much.

There's been a lot of talk lately about weblog standards and protocols and open standards and whatnot--and something about it worries me.
I'm all about open standards. I've worshipped HTML for ages, and welcomed CSS, XHTML and XML. I'm all about making stuff that can play nice with other stuff, but after watching the development of RSS standards, I think it's important to remember some key features any standard has to keep in mind: optional complexity.

One of the things that makes web creation so attractive and widespread is its layered nature. Elaboration available for those who desire it, but simplicity available for those who don't. If you want, you can use JavaScript, CSS, and a host of server-side manipulations of a site to make something that's really impressive. If you don't want that, you can simply throw some HTML into a file, and spit out a web site "Voila!" style.

I'm hip with XML, but I haven't given much mind to tweaking my RSS feeds. Why? Not because I'm not interested, but because I can't be bothered to figure out its intricacies. I've seen the code before, and it hasn't been very inviting. Movable Type templates have the same problem. More rarely did I ever find someone who used a generic Greymatter template, but an unreasonably high percentage of MT users use templates made by someone else. I think part of this is due to the complexity of the template syntax. For some reason, whether they're simpler or not, GM templates appear to be more inviting.

Therefore, whatever we do with standardizing archives, posts, and CMS interoperability needs to be inviting enough so people will use it (otherwise it's worthless), and flexible enough so CMS vendors will purely implement it (otherwise it's just as worthless--look at what almost happened to JavaScript).

A timeline of Copyright law in the US.
Did you know that each time the copyright of Mickey Mouse has come up for expiration, Disney has successfully lobbied for an extension of copyright law? It's now up to 75 years after the death of the author (for works-for-hire, like Disney shit, it's 95 years after the first publishing, or 120 years after date of creation, whichever comes first). The Founding Fathers, in the Copyright Act of 1790, had fourteen in mind.

So I'm working out on my porch (have I mentioned that I love my cellular modem?), because it's a really gorgous night, and I'm using one of those keep-the-bugs-away candles, right? Earlier, a mosquito flew into the flame and burned to death.
Somehow I don't think that's what the folks at Off! had in mind.

The corporate filtering system, which is the system that brought you (in my humble opinion) a piece of crap like "Mambo No. 5" and didn't let you hear the brilliant Cat Power record or the amazing new Sleater Kinney record*, obviously doesn't have good taste anyway. But we've never paid major label/distributors for their good taste.
     - Courney Love, "Courtney Love Does the Math"

I remember reading this article when it came out in 2000, and I post the link not only because it's a great read (based off this article, which I also read about the same time†), but because since I read it, Missy has introduced me to the "brilliance" of Cat Power and Indienow radio has indroduced me to the "amazing" Sleater-Kinney. I've always kind of liked what Courney Love has to say, even though I wouldn't trust her any farther than I can throw a 32" television.

*I don't think they want to be that big, though, according to this interview with Carrie.
†though I don't remember how I stumbled upon either of them. The links were resurrected from my memory by Jason.

Why is it that every twenty minutes they come up with a different way to pull the ring off a gallon of milk?
Quarts of oil and 20-ouncers of pop both have different ring-removal methods, but at least they're consistant. The milk in my region seems to have some sort of ring-removal method commitment complex. Hell, once I saw a modificaton on the 'pull-the-tab' style that had THREE different tabs on it, and you could elect to pull any of the three tabs to tear the ring off the bottom of the cap. Seriously, is there anyone who buys a gallon of milk and takes it home screaming "I can never find the fucking tab! They should put more of them on here!" Cass-Clay probably just hired an engineer full time before realizing that they don't need one, because they're a dairy company, so he just sits around all week designing new bottle caps.

Or maybe I just need to get out more.

A watch that runs the Palm OS. Too cool.
I also find it humorous that the three people that left Palm to start Handspring (I have an olde skool Visor, btw, which has the same amount of memory as the aforementioned watch.), just were bought back into the company.

This excerpt of a cross-platform, cross-browser vulnerability went out to Bugtraq yesterday, and I started laughing my ass off...
Synopsis:
--------

Opera, Mozilla & Netscape with javascript enabled are vulnerable to remote command execution. This has been tested on Microsoft, and many many Unices. Macintosh may also be vuln.

Ironically enough, IE is unaffected.
Ironically enough indeed.

Yesterday, Kate had a vote as to whether or not Gollum was the Jar-Jar Binks of LOTR. She accomplished this by having people email her, and then she counted them by hand. I reckoned I could write a script to do that before the day was out.
