Dave, relax already. This isn't nearly as big a paradigm shift as you're making it out to be. Who's more foolish? The fool who makes shite, or the fool who installs and uses it?
Here's my point:
Should Google do this? Nope. I see where Winer is going with this; some people will use it, and for them, our content will be altered after the fact without our control. However, that is the very nature of the web: Here's some content, what tool you use to render the markup and how it does that is up to you. This is another thing that needs to and will be regulated by simple market forces. I feel the same way about municipal bans on smoking in restaurants.
Should people smoke? Nope. But if people don't want smoke in restaurants, then they'll vote with their dollars. Non-smoking establishments will do better than those which allow smoking, and market forces will make that the way to go. If people like Google's tool, then it's our job as content creators to expect the possibility of and make allowances for its use.

I love Apple--I do--but Suw has been gone for two weeks now, and there hasn't been an update to my repair status. I waited, because I didn't want to be the kind of person who calls in and annoys someone just to find out "Yep, we're still working on it." I waited, but I called today, to find out what the hell is taking so long.
"It looks like your repair is on hold because they have a part on order."
"They don't stock parts?"
"Oh, no, they can't stock them all."
"Oh, does Apple outsource the repair, or..."
"No, it goes to an Apple repair center."
"So..."
"Yeah?"
"...so from whom are they ordering a part?"
"From the manufacturer."
At this point I bit my tongue, and resisted the urge to say, "Well who am I on the phone with?"

"Looks like it's been here for nine days now, and that's longer than we like, so what I can do is create a priority part search for you..."
"...a priority part search?"
"Yes, after seven to ten days we can create a priority part search, and you've been on hold for nine, so I can set that up for you. It'll take about two days to process. If you haven't heard from us by Tuesday, you can give us a call."
"Yes, but what's a priority part search?"
"Well, it gives your part search priority. I don't know how else to explain it."
Once again, I resisted, and didn't say "Priority to whom?! And if you have a faster way to get parts, why not do that to begin with?"
Whatever. I just want my Mac back.

"Dude, computers are things you just can't go without for too long! At least you have Johanna to truck along at her slow and steady pace for a bit :)"

"Trav you can always come over and play with my new mac...it doesn't replace Suw but it would be a good time."

A friend sent me a link to The Political Compass, and I thought it'd be neat to look at. Consider the example chart to the right, and you'll get an idea of how they use your answers to assign you a spot. Now, let's compare my position to the position of other political figures.

To the left we have my position, based on the answers I gave during testing. You'll notice that I'm well-centered in the libertarian left quadrant. (I'm sure you're all surprised.)

Now we see the placement of major international political figures. I'm nestled right in with Nelson Mandela, The Dalai Lama, and (on the analysis page, not on this particular graph) Gandhi. Who am I the sum opposite of?

Oh, you know I'm gonna' say Dubya.

"Would you believe me if I told you that I am situated RIGHT next to Pope John Paul II????? I am as surprised as you are! I really thought I'd be more in the upper right hand corner...alrighty then! "
