eMusic #2 retailer of online music
This is the most exciting news I've read in weeks. (I'm being serious.) I love eMusic. They have (almost) all the artists I listen to (no Le Tigre!), and the subscription model is affordable and convenient. Best of all: every track is an honest-to-goodness, no strings attached, ID3 tagged MP3. No DRM. No restrictions. Just how God intended it to be.
Live long and prosper, eMusic.

Apple has been heavy in the 'switch' campaign for some time now, and with every "Oh my god this is great!" switcher, there's the "Windows totally works better" and the "Linux is so much better for these reasons." Each blog post like them is full of bullet points that instead of saying "I don't know how to do x" they say "OS X sucks because it doesn't do x."
I'll say it again: Computers are tools, and tools accomplish tasks. You need to choose the right tool for your task. If you don't want to use OS X, that's fine. Have a nice life. I know that parts of OS X suck, and they bother me, but I use it for the tasks for which it is the best tool. It's not a media event, though. Nobody cares. We've all made our own decisions for our own reasons.

It's often said that you shouldn't compare apples and oranges—generally used figuratively, but even looking at it literally you can see that it's not true. You need to compare apples and oranges when you're deciding what to pack in your lunch. What you can't do is compare apples and oranges and somehow conclusively prove that one is better than the other.
Spot on, Tim.

The New York Times is talking about how ratings are fallling on Iraq. This is an excellent article, pointing out one more way to say 'I told you so.'"
From another angle, it's really, really sad that the collective realization that the war is unjustified and unwinnable results not in outrage or demands for accountability, but in apathy. To paraphrase The Daily Mirror: how can people be so dumb?

Because no one wants to actually have to print something to play WWDC Bingo, I humbly present the Interactive WWDC Bingo Card.

Paul Graham via Tim:

It can be hard to separate the things you like from the things you're impressed with. One trick is to ignore presentation. Whenever I see a painting impressively hung in a museum, I ask myself: how much would I pay for this if I found it at a garage sale, dirty and frameless, and with no idea who painted it? If you walk around a museum trying this experiment, you'll find you get some truly startling results. Don't ignore this data point just because it's an outlier.
I do the same thing in reverse, too. After all, I genuinely liked Papa Roach and Vertical Horizon long before they hit TRL, why should I rule out Kelis just because I didn't hear "Milkshake" until it was already widely known as shitty MTV music?
