Barenaked Ladies successfully stick it to the recording industry
The Barenaked Ladies are offering their latest album, "Barenaked Ladies Are Me," as a download from their website without digital rights management. All audio downloads are available in the popular MP3 format, encoded at 196kbps.Wow. That's a really subversive, consumer-positive, and innovative thing... that's already been done how many times before--except it was like, more... uh, free.

C'mon and shout it!
You don't have to be a geek or some kind of nerd
to know about it.
It's no mystery,
just a little chemistry:
When you got that many things
you got a mole!
An empty inbox is a truly refreshing sight, isn't it?
Not surprising that the people involved with the HP social-engineering scandal are being indicted. What is kind of surprising is that a company listed on the Dow Jones hired some shitty little outfit (with a shitty little website) to do the work. In turn, it's not surprising that the shitty little outfit they hired also has a shitty little website (which is currently offline) and an AOL email address. You mean to tell me that this is the best crew that a corporation with over $80 billion in revenue could scrape together?
I particularly enjoyed this quotation from the SOS site (note the use of future tense):
The company will have a solid reputation for integrity, quality of work product and customer service in the security industry.I hope they still have the license for the copy of FrontPage they used--they'll need it to add "...right after our owner gets out of prison."
I used fink to install MySQL rather than using the official installer. As a result, I didn't have a pre-fab script to start MySQL on boot. I couldn't find one, and my efforts to make one that worked were twarted by things I didn't care to take the time to sort out. Thus, I stole the official StartupItems script and hacked it to work with fink. For those in a similar situation who aren't afraid to use my dirty hacks, a download is available. Modest familiarity of StartupItems is assumed.
