Neat Siri tricks

Nicole: "So, does she pass the... Turing Test, or whatever?"
Me: "No, not even close."
Nicole: "Well. Ask her."
Me: "Do you pass the Turing Test?"
Siri: "This is about you, not me."

More:

Me: "Show me some cool shit."
Siri: "I'll pretend I didn't hear that."

Nicole: "How old are you?"
Siri: "I don't see why that should matter, Travis."

Nicole: "Where are you from"
Siri: "I, Siri, was designed by Apple in California."

Nicole: "This is nice weather we're having, isn't it?"
Siri: "No, i don't think it's particularly nice." <she shows the weather>

Nicole: "Did i fire six shots, or only five"
Siri: "I don't know what you mean by 'did I fire six shots or only five.'"

Can't win 'em all, I guess.

Richard Stallman:

Trusted computing” is the proponents' name for a scheme to redesign computers so that application developers can trust your computer to obey them instead of you. From their point of view, it is “trusted”; from your point of view, it is “treacherous.”

Say what you will about his politics or personality, this is the best definition I've ever found.

Lemony Snicket:

Historically, a story about people inside impressive buildings ignoring or even taunting people standing outside shouting at them turns out to be a story with an unhappy ending.

Jason (@damndilettante) ran for Student Body President at NDSU once. They didn't exactly "win." They did have a pretty sweet theme song, though. Here's an excerpt:

For President there's Jason Lord,
he uses big words like "delineate."
His running mate is Jacob Johnson,
whose roomie likes to masturbate.
Together, they can change the world,
make it a better place to be.
But to be honest,
they mostly just wanna get their tuition free.

Classic.

Originally, I planned to put this on my blog if DiscMakers didn't correct their cock-up. They didn't, and I never got around to posting it (since I haven't gotten around to posting anything in over two years). Since it was so long ago, I was going to let it slide, but they inexplicably started sending me catalogs. The nerve displayed by this action has motivated me to follow through.

Here's the deal: we wanted to give a mix CD to everyone as a wedding favor. We made a mix of songs that Nicole and I gave each other on mixes we exchanged while we were apart. (Cute, huh?)
DiscMakers wouldn't do the duplication because they were copyrighted material. For this I do not blame them. That's fine. The way they handled it, though, is a case-study in failure.

This is the email I sent them after we instead just had them print the liner notes (full of copyrighted lyrics, ironically) and burned the CDs ourselves the day of the wedding. (We still have some if anyone wants one.)

I've so far not received a reply.

When the gateway IP at work got listed in DroneBL, I couldn't access FreeNode. After unblocking the IP, I decided to drop in to #dronebl and lurk for a while, and immediately had a chuckle:

from(ChanServ) [#dronebl] If you came here looking to be unbanned, We cannot unban you from any service you are trying to access. Please follow the instructions on our site and wait a few hours, we suggest running anti-virus software while you are waiting.

Smart asses.

I love Netflix. I have the Roku Netflix player, and there was a movie that wasn't playing properly. I figured it would get fixed after a while, but after several weeks, the audio was still all messed up. I wasn't really dying to see the movie, but I was kind of curious about the issue, so I decided to contact tech support.

  1. I figured I'd just send an e-mail, since I wasn't really interested in waiting on hold, but I found that they don't even bother with anything other than phone support, and the hold time was less than a minute.
  2. After my short wait, the call was answered by a delightful, articulate, American girl.
  3. I explain that "I have the Roku set-top player, and there's this one movie, Welcome to the Dollhouse, that won't play properly...." She interrupted me to say (!) "Oh, yeah. I tried to watch that the other night—I have the Roku player, too. That's actually a known issue... the file was loaded incorrectly. Oh, I show that the issue has been removed. I'll re-submit the error. If you really want to watch the movie, what I can do is send out the disc as a courtesy. Have you ever seen it? It's a really funny movie. I love the scene where...."

I don't recall the last time I enjoyed a support call as much. I almost didn't want to hang up--I wanted to talk about movies with her. A customer support rep.! Who knew?

Is me, or is Dreamweaver totally broken once you have more than one person in your company?

Case in point:
It shouldn't matter how or by whom the template changes—if Dreamweaver ever notices that the template is different, it should realize that any resource based on that template could potentially be stale, and offer an opportunity to update them.

America Will Soon Owe More Than It’s Citizens Are Worth

Given more recent developments, it’s clear that America now owes more than its citizens are worth. Passing this shocking milestone highlights the need for President-elect Obama and the next Congress not only to turn the economy around and boost consumer confidence, but to put a process in place that will lead to tough choices getting made to strengthen the government’s financial condition once the economy begins growing again.

Toldja so.
